The Seeds Of Movement Wisdom
Jess started her exploration of the body and spirit as a kid growing up in Kansas City. Her elementary school slumber parties with friends mixed Disney movies with meditation & hyperventilation games to reach altered states of consciousness.
By middle school, she split her free time between the basketball court and the soccer field, and went to the local Buddhist and Unity temples on weekends.
This mix of intense physicality and deep spirituality was the foundation of what would one day become Movement Wisdom Yoga.
Yoga As A Handbook For Hard Times
When her best friend died at 20, Jess tried to numb the pain with drugs and alcohol. The day she graduated college, she left Kansas and traveled the world with a band.
Before finally settling in Europe, and still searching for healing, Jess tried yoga for the first time at a YMCA in Toronto. The loud music, harsh lights, heat, and crowded room were overwhelming, and she fled after just five minutes, convinced yoga wasn't for her.
It took several years before Jess went to another yoga class — this time at a cancer hospital in Texas where her mom had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. For several months Jess and her mom went to daily restorative yoga classes at the hospital.
These sessions were very different from the chaotic yoga class she'd fled at the YMCA. This was gentle yoga for the heart and spirit. Each session was an escape into peace and quiet amidst an ocean of unbearable uncertainty and pain.
Jess discovered what yoga is truly about.
Despite the constant fear of losing her mom, Jess felt more whole and balanced than ever before. Yoga helped her realize that the mystical state she'd been chasing since childhood actually lived within her all along.
10,000 Hours Of Yoga
After her mom left the hospital, Jess kept going. She threw herself into yoga like her life depended on it and practiced six days a week, 90 minutes a day.
As her physical practice evolved, Jess got more and more interested in the spiritual and philosophical side of yoga. When a friend suggested that she should join a yoga teacher training to learn more.
… Three weeks later, she had sold most of her belongings and was en route to her first YTT in India. Not necessarily to become a professional teacher, but to fully understand the vastness of yoga.
Jess completed her training and spent several months living in an ashram. She studied with spiritual teachers and traveled to sacred pilgrimage sites across the subcontinent.
In those days Jess learned to view herself and all of life through the eyes of a yogi.
The training was the beginning of a 10-year learning journey that included multiple return trips to India, several more 200 and 300-hour YTTs in the US and Europe, certifications in Yin, Restorative, Seniors and Prenatal Yoga, and rigorous studies in anatomy and movement science. But the wisdom she gained in India remains her greatest inspiration, and compass, in life.
From 12 Students To 1 Million Over Night
In 2015, a scout for DoYouYoga - then the world's largest online yoga community - discovered Jess' teaching in a dance room at an elementary school.
Overnight, she went from having 12 dedicated students, to teaching hundreds of thousands worldwide. Her work caught the attention of major publications including San Francisco Yoga Magazine, NY Magazine, YogiTimes, and Elephant Journal.
By 2018, Jess had filmed hundreds of classes for multiple major yoga platforms and several hundred thousand students practiced with her regularly.
She also began leading sold-out retreats and training programs in Morocco, Italy, Thailand, Mexico, France, and Spain.
The Birth Of Movement Wisdom
During the pandemic, after a decade of non-stop studying and teaching, Jess shifted her focus from teaching classes to teaching teachers.
She had experienced the power of yoga first-hand. But Jess had also learned that
Getting a solid yoga education — learning everything that a really good yoga teacher should know — is way harder than it should be.
Jess started the Movement Wisdom School of Yoga to make getting a world-class yoga education fast, affordable, and fun.
In the 200 Hour YTT students can learn in a few weeks what took Jess 10,000 hours to figure out. It's the most well-rounded program available.
The Seniors Yoga YTT (40 hours) was created because 99% of yoga teachers have no clue how to create safe and engaging classes for older adults. Senior students — who are the fastest growing group of yogis — deserve better teachers.
It's also an empowering program for senior practitioners who want to take matters into their own hands.
The Pregnancy Yoga Library is a collection of classes and meditations that help expecting yogis ease the discomfort of pregnancy and support their baby's development right from the start.
Personal Mission
At the end of the day, Jess is a fiery advocate for yoga as a life-changing, mind-blowing and empowering practice.
It breaks her heart to see that modern mainstream yoga keeps losing depth.
And so she's made it her mission to offer everyone who's truly passionate about yoga the chance to get a world-class education.
